Types of Liquor Licenses

Generally, there are two categories of liquor Licenses in South Africa, which are:

On-site Liquor Consumption Category: these type of liquor licenses are issued to establishments where liquor can ONLY be consumed on the premises where it is sold, NO take-away is allowed. The types of licenses this category include Restaurants, Taverns, Pub & Grills, Night Clubs, etc.

Off-site Liquor Consumption Category: these type of liquor licenses are issued to establishments where liquor can ONLY be consumed somewhere else and NOT in the premises where it is sold. The types of licenses in this category include Bottle Stores, Wine Grocer's Stores, Micro-breweries, etc.

Tavern Liquor Licenses

On-site Consumptions

Liquor can ONLY be consumed on the premises where it is sold, TAKE AWAY is not allowed.

Restaurant Liquor Licenses

On-site Consumptions

Liquor can ONLY be consumed on the premises where it is sold, TAKE AWAY is not allowed.

Pub & Grill Liquor Licenses

On-site Consumptions

Liquor can ONLY be consumed on the premises where it is sold, TAKE AWAY is not allowed.

Liquor Store Licenses

Off-site Consumptions

Liquor can only be consumed elsewhere and NOT on the premises where it is sold.

Wine Grocer's Liquor Licenses

Off-site Consumptions

Liquor can only be consumed elsewhere and NOT on the premises where it is sold.

Micro-brewery Liquor Licenses

Off-site Consumptions

Liquor can only be consumed elsewhere and NOT on the premises where it is sold.

Hotel Liquor Licenses

On-site Consumptions

Liquor can ONLY be consumed on the premises where it is sold, TAKE AWAY is not allowed.

Catering Liquor Licenses

On-site Consumptions

Liquor can ONLY be consumed on the premises where it is sold, TAKE AWAY is not allowed.

Special Liquor Licenses

On/ Off-site Consumptions

Liquor can be consumed either on or off the premises where it is sold. The consumer has a choice.
