Restaurant Liquor Licenses fall under the On-site liquor Consumption category, meaning liquor can only be consumed where it is bought, no takes-aways. The most important condition for approval of restaurant liquor licenses is that the business' main source of income is generated from the sale of food and the sale of liquor is a compliment. The other license conditions are that the restaurant must have a fully functional kitchen and a food menu, lockable storeroom where excess liquor will be store, at least, two toilets, one for male and another one for female patrons as well as a demarcated sales area. No sales of alcohol to persons under the age of 18 and no loud music is allowed. The annual renewal fees and trading hours for restaurant liquor licenses differ from province to province.
Bottle Store Liquor Licenses
Bottle/ liquor store liquor licenses fall under the off-site liquor consumption category, meaning customers can buy liquor but can only consume it elsewhere, not in the store where it was bought. The alcoholic products so purchased must be taken out still sealed in their original packages for consumption in other places. The bottle/ liquor stores allowed to stock and sell a large variety and quantity of alcohol to other retailers (such as taverns/ restaurants) and the general public. The main requirement bottle/ liquor store licenses is the availability of a suitable structure with shop floor, storeroom and demarcated sales area. The annual license renewal fees for bottle/ liquor store licenses differ from province to province. The general trading hours for bottle/ liquor store licenses are: 08h00 – 20h00 (Monday – Friday), 08h00 – 17h00 (Saturday), and 10h00 – 15h30 (Sunday).
